David Shannon writes this funny children's book Too Many Toys. In this story Spencer has so many toys his parents don't know what to do with them all; they're taking over the house. In the end, Spencer finally decides to part with some and he fills a box with the ones he wants to get rid of. When his Mom returns to get the box, she finds it toppled over and all the toys are scattered across the floor. Spencer ends up saying, "We can't get rid of this box, it's the best toy ever!"
When we were at Sam's Club the other day, we brought our groceries home in this really large box. This box has been a boat, Toy Story reading chair, and tonight has turned into an art canvas. Ava and Isaiah took their bath and then we all spent the rest of the night decorating the box. Isaiah drew things like lightning bolts and Jackson. Ava drew Isaiah, Jackson, and a kangaroo (kind of random). These are just a few of the things they drew. Anyway this plain ordinary brown cardboard box, is now radiant with color and creativity. This reminded me of the story that we often read and I just got a kick out of how many toys we have all over our house and the most entertaining toy of the night was this box.
We'll see if we have school tomorrow. The snow accumulation is suppose to be over 10 inches. If we're home, I'm sure we'll have a day of crafts, movies, and what the kids call "The Beach" (we pile up all the chair and couch cushions and add all the pillows and blankets we have to make this gigantic pile that they jump into...I have some pictures from this weekend of them doing this I'll have to post later).
My Three Happy's:
1) Inexpensive toys like "the brown box" that provide entertainment
2) Snow, Snow, Snow...that means a possibility of a delay, early out, or no school tomorrow
3) Jackson...he drags in mud and snow, slobbers all over the floor, chews up bones and leaves crumbs all over, and sheds his fur everywhere...but he is the best dog anyone could ever ask for! We all love him so much, even though he's like having another kid. :-)

Our Little Guy is Growing Up
I can't believe how much Isaiah has grown up in the last few months. My little baby boy is now a kid and it's hard for me to accept that he's becoming more independent each day. This morning we had to run to Sam's Club and to Target to pick up a toy for a birthday party the kids are going to this week. Anyway, I'm so used to Ava being the "Shopper." Now Isaiah is taking after is sister and enjoys making his own choices. Here's what the kids ended up with when we walked out of the store:
Ava: Isaiah:
1) Hello Kitty toothbrush 1) Batman toothbrush
2) Dora toothpaste 2) Toy Story toothpaste
3) Princess bubble bath 3) Toy Story bubble bath
4) "Fish" cherry shampoo 4) "Fish" cherry shampoo (may have been influenced a bit)
5) Hello Kitty galoshes 5) Frog galoshes
6) Brown strappy shoes 6) Gray cloth slip-ons
7) Tinkerbell slippers 7) Spider Man slippers
8) New outfit for American Girl doll 8) Imaginext Batman helicopter
Needless to say our kids have us wrapped around their little fingers. We have grown to accept the fact that when we leave Target we will not only be leaving with bags of things but a long, pricey receipt.
Tonight when Isaiah was brushing his teeth, he really showed us that he can now brush with "big kid" toothpaste. He was using that training stuff that can be swallowed, but now he can brush and spit all by himself; we of course brush after he's done to make sure he's gotten toall his teeth. He just looked like such a big boy on his stool in front of the mirror. When I put Isaiah to bed tonight were were reading a book called ABC Under Construction. It's about the alphabet and how a playground is being constructed out of letters. Anyway he was able to recognize A, B, O, and with a little prompt "I." He always tells me if a letter I read is in his name and if it is, he counts how many times he sees it. When I read the "I" page he said while pointing to his name on the wall, "Mommy, I have two." I still think of him as being my little one but these little things I see everyday are just a reminder that he is growing up.
***I keep forgetting to share this with you. When Isaiah goes to bed, he always requests Andy or I to sing these three songs to him.

3) Amazing Grace.........................what variety! :-)
When I checked in on Ava to say good night, Andy was reading out of the Disney Halloween anthology. He was telling me that he had read a few sentences wrong in one of the Aladdin stories and Ava corrected him. He said "there" and she said, "No Dad, it's here." It's amazing what details kids see everyday that we as adults pass by.
I should be cleaning the kitchen, putting laundry away, finishing my lesson plans for Monday, dusting the upstairs...the list is always endless. But I think watching a movie with Andy sounds better. Hope you all have a relaxing night too!

Together Forever

Our Little Loves
It was such a beautiful day in Iowa that the kids played outside for almost an hour after school. They haven't used their swings or played on our play set for such a long time. While I started dinner, Andy took them out back. They had a blast...here are a few pictures of them playing. Notice Ava's pink mittens that Isaiah wanted to wear.

I've Figured it Out!
So it's taken a few weeks, but I think I figured out how to post pictures. I'm still working on sizing, placement, and rotation issues, but other than that everyone can begin enjoying them!
We had a great night tonight. It was one of those "perfect nights" in my eyes. When we came home, the kids were in super moods. They played well together, were kind to each other, listened to us, brushed their teeth when we asked them to, and went to bed when it was time. I couldn't have asked for a better evening with my little ones and Andy.
I can't believe how much they have both grown and learned. Andy and I try to work on some reading or math skill each night with them. Whether it is counting or letter and sound recognition, we try to spend at least 5-10 minutes doing some kind of learning activity. Isaiah can count objects up to 13, knows the letters, A, B, and O, and recognizes circles, squares, rectangles, traingles, and ovals. Tonight he was cutting so well with scissors while we were doing crafts and even used his marker and said "Mommy I made an O." There it was...wobbily of course, but legible. I'm so proud of my little guy.
Ava knows all of her letters and sounds, can sound out and read three letter words like cat, mop, ten, fin, etc. She can also read the word "the" and recognizes it when we read stories to her. She takes great pride in finding that word numerous times on the pages. She can write most of her letters and numbers and can count to 40. We have been using the "Handwriting Without Tears" blocks and both of the kids like to build letters with them; they also enjoy just exploring and making random designs and pictures. They are both like sponges. They love learning and anything we can do in the form of a game really sparks their interest. The other day we hid Mercer Mayer "Little Critters" with letters around the house and I gave clues as to where they were. They loved being "detectives" and found all of them. It's hard to believe my babies will both be in preschool next year!

Beauty Salons...They're Not Just For Women
We've had a busy day so far...we watched The Lion King, played, played, and played, the kids took baths (while eating popsicles), and we'll be going to the Ballard boy's basketball game tonight. The kids are really looking forward to sporting their Ballard clothes and cheering on the Bombers.
My Three Happy's:
1) Catching up with all the laundry... well almost...I think I've done 6 loads already.
2) Scentsy Burners: I love how they make the whole house smell yummy.
3) Living in the Ballard Community: It's filled with so many neat families and we've made so many new friends while living here. It seems like we know almost everyone when we go to sporting events.

Beauty and the Beast
When most people think of "Beauty and the Beast" they think of Disney and that beautiful princess named Belle...not this time. Tonight our family went to Iowa State's interpretation of this title....a gymnastics meet and a wrestling match which go on at the same time. This is something that Iowa State had done for the past three years to draw fans in for a night of fun.
We ate a quick dinner at Wendy's and then headed over to Hilton Coliseum. We sat in the balcony so the kids could see better. They really enjoyed watching the gymnasts do the vault and uneven bars. The wrestling match was going on right next to the gymnastics. You could see Isaiah eyeing that side of the floor more often than his sister. The kids proceeded to munch on popcorn and Twizzlers and they drank water and Sprite (as the kids say "kids pop"). Isaiah eventually needed to roam so we made some laps around the arena. Ava and Isaiah both got to see Cy tonight. They love that mascot, although Isaiah wasn't interested in hugging him or giving him a high five. Ava got her picture taken with him again.
We decided to leave when the kids both said they were getting tired. As we were leaving Ava insisted we see the "Johnny Orr" statue and they both wanted to take some Cyclone men's and women's basketball posters home. Both of the kids wanted the posters taped to their walls. Immediately when we got home, Ava instructed Andy as to where she wanted the posters hung in her room. Isaiah didn't have much of an opinion...he's pretty easy going like his Daddy. Both of the kids are in bed now and Andy and I are ready to start a movie. We'll see if we can make it through without falling asleep. Happy Friday!

Snowpups and Sleds
Today was an interesting day weather wise for Iowa. We woke up to a few inches of snow and then it rained and misted most of the day. Although the weather was kind of icky, the temperature was amazing... above 32 degrees. When we got home from school today we bundled the kids up and headed outdoors. Isaiah is such "a boy" and wanted to shovel the deck off while Ava began to make a "snowpup." One of her stories Snowman at Night has this character in it. I really wish I could figure out the picture thing; you'd love to see how it turned out. (I'm still having difficulty loading pictures onto the computer from my camera.) It was made out of two snowballs, had ears, eyes, a nose, and a little mouth. We put paws for the feet and hands and the used one of Jackson's raccoon tails (pretend of course) as the puppy's tail. It looks pretty cute. Ava was very proud of it.
After about 30 minutes of playing in the backyard, we took the kids on a sled ride. We went back to our local park and the kids had a blast going down the slides. Isaiah went so fast down the curly slide that he flew off and landed in a pile of snow at the bottom. It was so funny to watch. The whole time it had been misting, but we were all having so much fun that no one seemed to notice it. Once we got home, Ava and Isaiah had a little snowball fight and then we headed in for dinner. Nothing like 1 1/2 hours of outdoor fun to tire you out. After dinner the kid enjoyed some cocoa and marshmallows. Isaiah insists that it's "cocoa" not hot chocolate. What a fun day!

Shopaholics, Batman, and Bruises
I am pleased to announce that Ava is definitely a mini shopaholic. For those of you who know me well, you know I love reading the Sophie Kinsella series The Shopaholic. These novels are about a young woman who loves to spend the money that she doesn't have. Her most recent book Mini Shopaholic is about her new daughter who is a toddler and has inherited the shopping gene. Yesterday Ava was invited to a birthday party for one of her preschool friends and we needed to get a present. Before the party the two of us had lunch at Wendy's (Ava's choice) and went to Target with the goal of coming out with a doll, card, and gift bag. Some how our cart was almost filled to the top with items when we went to check out. Ava has an eye for seasonal items, just like her mother, and was very interested in purchasing some Valentine decorations for the house. The first things she picked out were two large heart pillows; hers was multicolored with pastels and Isaiah's was red...she never leaves out her brother when shopping...how thoughtful. That was followed by two small heart pillows, two pairs of socks (hearts and Batman), a wooden heart wreath (which she was convinced would look great in her room), a mini beaded heart decoration to hang from a door knob, Valentines for daycare and preschool (princess ones for Ava, pirates for Isaiah), candy for the valentines, and conversation heart candy. Along with this doll that we got, Ava insisted we get a large princess gift bag, cupcake tissue paper, and a Fancy Nancy card. This girl has style! Of course she's not spending her own money yet so doesn't understand how much things add up, but I'm so proud to have a daughter who loves to shop for "things we don't need" as much as I do! Andy's going to love this when she's in high school!
Mr. Isaiah has developed a fascination for Batman. He loves playing with his Imaginext bat cave and enjoys capturing the Riddler, the Joker, and Two-Face with this Batman and Robin characters. Ava likes playing with him too. Today Andy was downstairs with the kids and they were looking for a movie to watch. We have Netflix and can download hundreds of movies. They choose the original Batman and were enthralled by it! It seemed pretty cheesy to me, but they loved every minute of it. Looks like that will become a favorite we will watch time and time again!
Ava looks like a tough cookie now that she has a black eye. She wanted to watch another movie tonight and we told her she had seen enough for the day. She is a very opinionated and determined child. She loves to reason and tries to think of creative ways to get her way. She continued to be very upset and Andy was holding her and trying to talk to her and calm her down. She basically just jumped off Andy's lap, out of the chair, and smacked her eye onto the edge of one of our end tables. After about a half an hour of icing it, the swelling went down and she's now left with a pretty good bruise. She was pretty shook up about it at first. Now she's worried about the color. When I was putting her to bed, she said, "Wash the color off my face." I've explained over and over that it's just a bruise, no different then one you might get on your leg. I think she finally has accepted the fact that she will have a discolored eye for a few days. Isaiah was so cute tonight too. He kept coming in her room to check on her when she was crying. He said "What's wrong Sissie?" He loves her so much. Whenever he leaves her room, he shuts the door and says, "Don't let the bed bugs bite." We are so blessed to have amazing children who get along so well. That should be one of my "Happy's" each day. I'm so thankful that they have a close relationship.
Andy and I trade off nights when we put the kids to bed. I had Ava tonight as mentioned earlier and her last comment before she closed her eyes and fell asleep was, "Mom, we forgot to get a dress at Target." That's my girl!

1) My amazing husband: I love watching him play with the kids. He is truly a hero to them and me!
2) Listening to Ava and Isaiah sing "We will, we will rock you" while bouncing their heads around.
3) Talking to Julie for 45 minutes while the kids were napping. I love my sister!

Snow Much Fun!
I've had quite the experience starting this blog. I originally started one in October and then got frustrated because I didn't know how to upload pictures. Now that I'm bound and determind to figure that out, I forgot the username and password to get into my blog. So the end result is that I'm completely starting over. For now, you won't be seeing any pictures until I can learn how to do it. I figure reading what we have been doing will work for now...so please be patient with me.
Today we woke up with the news that we had a 2 hour delay for school which changed into a complete cancellation. What a great way to start a Tuesday! This morning we bundled the kids up to play out back in the deep snow. Ava and Isaiah then took a sled ride to our local park where they trodded through the piles of snow and played on the equipment. They lasted for about a half an hour and then we headed home for hot cocoa.
After lunch Ava wanted to play preschool so she brought almost every doll she owns into the living room and we started working on letters and sounds. Isaiah kept busy chiming in now and then but he was content working on the chalk board and reading Ava's Dora book collection.
The kids are down for their naps now and when they wake up, we're going to make a snowman craft with marshmallows, pretzels, and chocolate chips. If you give my kids glue, scissors, and any art supplies, they will be happy for hours it seems. Hopefully I can eventually post how these turn out.

Today we woke up with the news that we had a 2 hour delay for school which changed into a complete cancellation. What a great way to start a Tuesday! This morning we bundled the kids up to play out back in the deep snow. Ava and Isaiah then took a sled ride to our local park where they trodded through the piles of snow and played on the equipment. They lasted for about a half an hour and then we headed home for hot cocoa.
After lunch Ava wanted to play preschool so she brought almost every doll she owns into the living room and we started working on letters and sounds. Isaiah kept busy chiming in now and then but he was content working on the chalk board and reading Ava's Dora book collection.
The kids are down for their naps now and when they wake up, we're going to make a snowman craft with marshmallows, pretzels, and chocolate chips. If you give my kids glue, scissors, and any art supplies, they will be happy for hours it seems. Hopefully I can eventually post how these turn out.
At the end of each of my posts, I'm going to include what I call "My Three Happy's." These are simply three things that I'm thankful for or things that made me smile that day. I need to remind myself to take time to appreciate all of the little things that happen around me. My kids are growing up so fast!
1) Hot cocoa and marshmallows
2) Actually cooking a nice dinner tonight
3) Seeing my two kids love each other so much and play so well together
